As part of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day events, a panel titled "Islamic, National, and Social Reflections of July 15" was organized in Kastamonu.
The panel held at the Public Education Center Conference Hall was attended by Kastamonu Governor Meftun Dallı, Kastamonu University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Atalan, representatives of public institutions and organizations, academics, students, and many citizens.
The panel was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fatih Kalın, a faculty member of the Faculty of Theology at Kastamonu University. In his opening speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kalın stated that July 15 was not just an attempted coup but also a multifaceted attack targeting Türkiye's social, political, and religious structure. He stated that the panel aims to contribute to the intellectual struggle in this context.
The first speaker at the panel, Prof. Dr. Temel Yeşilyurt, addressed how FETO exploited religious legitimacy in its coup attempt. Yeşilyurt emphasized that the organization instrumentalized religious concepts and values for its interests, creating a perception of legitimacy, and in this process, it distanced itself from the fundamental moral principles of Islam. He stated that the distortion of religious discourse in this way leads to serious fractures at both the individual and societal levels.
The second speaker of the panel, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cengiz Çuhadar, emphasized the significance of July 15 in terms of national unity and collective memory. Noting that the event caused society to unite around a common consciousness, Çuhadar stated that such historical turning points leave an eternal mark on the memory of nations. He stated that 15th July played a decisive role in the re-establishment of the spirit of national solidarity.
Finally, Prof. Dr. Ali Albayrak, who spoke last, evaluated the civil resistance that emerged on the night of July 15 from a sociological perspective. Prof. Dr. Albayrak stated that the people took to the streets with an unorganized and spontaneous reflex, defending the democratic will. He said that this process has strengthened values such as civic awareness, democratic culture, and social solidarity. He stated that civil resistance has gone down in history as an important social response that demonstrated society's will to take charge of its destiny.
At the end of the program, the session chair, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fatih Kalın, delivered a closing speech, emphasizing that July 15 should not be forgotten. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kalın emphasized the importance of accurately conveying the events to future generations and stated that the intellectual and moral struggle should continue.
The panel concluded with the presentation of plaques of appreciation to the speakers.
