The invention titled "AlN Reinforced Copper Matrix Composite Material," by Prof. Dr. Serkan Islak, a faculty member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Kastamonu University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, and doctoral student Hasaneen Houssain, has been patented by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.
Due to its electrical and thermal conductivity, copper is used in many fields, but because of its low hardness and strength, it may not perform adequately on its own in applications requiring high durability. The new composite material developed at our university aims to reduce these limitations of copper and achieve a more durable structure.
In the invention, copper is used as the primary material, while aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramic particles are utilized to enhance durability. Thus, the aim is to preserve the electrical conductivity of copper while also increasing its hardness and strength values.
The patented composite material has potential applications in many sectors, such as electrical and electronics, energy, thermal management, chemistry, aerospace, and automotive.
Our Rector, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal, emphasized the importance of scientific studies conducted at universities not being limited to the production of academic knowledge but also transforming into products and technologies that provide societal benefits.
Stating that our university continues its work in line with the goal of transforming scientific research into social benefit, our Rector congratulated Prof. Dr. Serkan Islak and doctoral student Hasaneen Houssain on their patent registration and wished them continued success.
Our Rector also thanked the President of the Higher Education Council, Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, and the President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak, for their support of the R&D, design, and intellectual property work carried out at our University.
