The "Anatomy of Violence: Understanding, Preventing, and Transforming" symposium, organized by the Midwifery Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Kastamonu University and the Midwifery and Women's Health Community, was held on September 24, 2025, with broad academic and community participation, as part of the UNİDES project supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and with an interdisciplinary approach.
The event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Abdulkadir Tuna, vice deans Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nesrin İçli and Assist. Prof. Dr. Nihal Aydın, Director of Health Services at Kastamonu Education and Research Hospital Saide Pakize Çetin, Student Affairs Officer Serap Nurgül Söyler, academics, healthcare professionals, lawyers, social workers, and students, who contributed to addressing the different dimensions of violence.
The symposium began with a moment of silence and an opening ceremony. The opening remarks were given by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Abdulkadir Tuna, and the President of the Midwifery and Women's Health Community, Midwife Büşra Yıldız. In the discussions, attention was given to the multi-dimensional nature of violence, and it was emphasized that the main goal of the symposium was to understand, prevent violence, and contribute to social transformation.
In the first session of the program, Assoc Prof. Dr. Nihal Aydın, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, presented "Definition and Types of Violence," where she discussed the conceptual framework, types, and social repercussions of violence. "Misogyny in Today's World," a speech by Assist.Prof.Dr. Simge Evrenol Öçal, a member at İzmir Kâtip Çelebi University Faculty of Nursing, explored the structural and cultural factors that contribute to violence against women.
Dr. Fatma Nazlı Demir, a gynecologist at Kastamonu Education and Research Hospital, raised attention to the dimension of violence against women in healthcare services in her presentation titled "The Right to Respect in Childbirth: Raising Awareness Against Obstetric Violence." The first session concluded with a musical performance followed by a lunch break.
In the second session, the multiple aspects of violence against women's health, children's rights, and legal dimensions were addressed. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şahika Şimşek Çetinkaya, Head of the Department of Midwifery at the Faculty of Health Sciences, presented "The Effects of Violence on Women's Health," highlighting the negative impacts of violence on physical, mental, and reproductive health.
In her speech titled "Conscious Youth, Effective Justice," the President of Halime Çavuş Women's Association, Attorney Hikmet Şule Özbay, emphasized the necessity of raising awareness among young people and strengthening legal mechanisms. Social Worker Mehtap Büyükçağlayan from the Kastamonu Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services evaluated early marriages from a child rights perspective in her presentation titled "Early Marriage: A Violation of Child Rights."
Sema Güneş Yanık, a specialist midwife at Kastamonu Education and Research Hospital, emphasized the preventive role of midwives and healthcare professionals in her presentation titled "The Role and Responsibilities of Midwives in Preventing Violence." The session concluded with a "Violence Awareness Show" performed by 4th-year midwifery students.
At the end of the symposium, significant outcomes were achieved regarding violence prevention, increasing social awareness, emphasizing the professional responsibilities of midwives, and raising awareness among young people. It was stated that these achievements are guiding for sustainable efforts aimed at protecting women's and community health.
At the end of the event, Res. Assist Demet Güney, Advisor to the Midwifery and Women's Health Community, and Community President Büşra Yıldız, Vice Presidents Çağla Aşut and Melike Köse, were presented with plaques by Assoc. Prof.Dr. Nesrin İçli, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, for their contributions to the symposium.
