Kastamonu University has patented a study on eco-friendly, natural ingredients in the field of dermocosmetics. The SPF 25+ sunscreen developed by Prof. Dr. Temel Kan Bakır, a faculty member of the Department of Chemistry at our university's Faculty of Science, and Dr. Mertcan Karadeniz, a faculty member of the Faculty of Forestry, which contains natural ingredients derived from the Lactarius deliciosus (saffron milk cap) mushroom, has been patented by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.
In the study, a sunscreen formulation was developed using the natural antioxidants and bioactive components of the kanlıca mushroom, which grows in the forests of Kastamonu, to protect the skin from the harmful effects of sunlight. One of the standout features of the product was that it provided both sun protection and antioxidant effects entirely with natural ingredients, without using synthetic UV filters.
According to the research results, the sunscreen containing mushroom extract provides SPF 25+ level protection suitable for daily use without leaving white marks on the skin. Thanks to its lack of chemical filters that harm the environment, it is also considered a safe alternative for marine life and ecosystems. With these features, the product stands out as a suitable option for sensitive skin as well.
The patented natural ingredient sunscreen aims to contribute to the health and cosmetics sector in line with the increasing environmental awareness and demand for natural cosmetic products.
In his evaluation of the study, our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal highlighted our University's focus on scientific production and societal benefit, stating the following:
“Our university prioritizes works that contribute to society by combining the natural riches of its geography with scientific knowledge. Developed with natural, environmentally friendly ingredients, this patented sunscreen is a concrete reflection of our commitment to research, innovation, and sustainability. We will continue to support projects that create value in the health and cosmetics sectors.
Our Rector also congratulated the inventors of the patent, Prof. Dr. Temel Kan Bakır, a faculty member of the Department of Chemistry at our University’s Faculty of Science, and Dr. Mertcan Karadeniz, a faculty member of the Faculty of Forestry. He thanked Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, President of the Higher Education Council, and Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak, President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, for their support for R&D activities.
