A program titled "The Name of Victory is Turkey" was organized as part of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day events. As part of this program, Prof. Dr. Şerif Demir, a faculty member in the Department of History at our University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, presented a conference titled "The Relationship Between Democracy and Coup in the Shadow of July 15."
Speaking at the program held on July 11, 2025, in the Provincial Directorate of National Education Conference Hall, Prof. Dr. Demir stated that he has been conducting academic studies on coups and the Democrat Party for approximately 30 years, emphasizing that no coup can be legitimized.
"We Must Confront Coups and Leave This Culture Behind"
Emphasizing the need to fight against coups in his speech, Prof. Dr. Demir highlighted that if we want to elevate the Republic of Türkiye to the level of contemporary civilization indicated by Atatürk, establish a democratic rule of law, and build a livable country, we must confront coups and strive to eradicate this phenomenon.
Expressing that it is not correct to approach some coups positively and others negatively, Prof. Dr. Demir said, "Approaches like 'May 27 was good but March 12 was terrible, September 12 was bad but February 28 was necessary...' are wrong." No coup can be legitimized with justifications such as "but," "however," or "nevertheless." No coup has ever benefited this country. Therefore, we must confront the culture of coup-making and stop seeing the coup itself as a solution. He used the expression.
"We Must Distinguish Between the Army-Nation Tradition and Coup-Making"
Pointing out that the political and social histories of Europe and Türkiye are different from each other, Prof. Dr. Demir stated that the class conflicts, revolutions, and social dynamics there are distinct from those in Türkiye.
Prof. Dr. Demir, "We are a society with a tradition of army-nation." The official founding date of our army dates back to 209 BC. There is a tradition, culture, and memory that spans 2200 years. However, history repeats itself. Every decade, a new constitution and a balancing adjustment occur. We need to leave these behind now," he concluded his words.
The program, which attracted great interest from participants, was appreciated as an event that made significant contributions to Türkiye's struggle for democracy and the process of raising awareness against coups.
