The "Patent, Utility Model, and Design Report" for 2025, prepared by the Technology Transfer Office of Kastamonu University, revealed data regarding our University's intellectual property performance. The report, covering the 2018-2025 period, included application and registration data.
According to the report, patent applications have increased steadily since 2021. The number of applications increased in 2024 and reached the highest level during the period in 2025. In international patent applications, the increase that began in 2023 reached 8 applications in 2025.
Given that patent processes take an average of 2-3 years, the registration data for 2022-2025 were also evaluated. In the 2018-2025 period, 7 of the 48 files whose applications were completed were PCT (international) applications, and across all inventions whose applications were completed, our University's registration rate was 66%. When only national applications are considered, this rate was 78%. The report stated that the number of files at the evaluation stage is high due to increased applications in recent years and the length of the evaluation process.
According to data in the field of design, the process that began with one application in 2015 and 2018 continued with three applications in 2021 and eight in 2022 and 2023. In 2024, 15 applications were made, while 16 applications were recorded in 2025.
Of the 52 design applications, 38 were registered, and 1 was rejected. The evaluation process for the other applications is ongoing. Based on the concluded files, the registration rate in the design field was 97%.
According to the report, a total of 50 applications were filed in 2025, including 22 national patents, 8 international (PCT) patents, 4 utility models, and 16 designs. These applications were prepared within the processes coordinated by the Technology Transfer Office of Kastamonu University and submitted to the relevant national and international institutions.
Our Rector, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal, in his evaluation of the report, stated that the intellectual property aspects of the research activities conducted at our University are regularly monitored by the Project Support Office within the Technology Transfer Office. Referring to the patent and design application data for the year 2025, our Rector stated the following:
Our university continues its efforts to transform scientific knowledge into social and economic benefits. The increase in patent, utility model, and design applications indicates that the processes for protecting research outputs are being conducted within an institutional framework. The registration rates, calculated as 78% for national patents and 97% for designs, have been determined based on the concluded files.
Emphasizing the importance of spreading applications across different academic units, our Rector stated that efforts will continue in the upcoming period to increase awareness of intellectual property in academic units, support interdisciplinary studies, and develop collaboration between academics and industry.
He thanked the President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak, and the President of the Council of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, for their contributions to the development of universities' capacities in this field.
