The "Driver Bus Usage Duration Tracking and Warning System in Intercity Bus Travel," developed by Prof. Dr. Kemal Akyol, a faculty member in the Computer Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Kastamonu University, has been registered as a utility model by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.
The developed system tracks driver usage times during intercity bus journeys in real time, providing audible warnings to drivers and other drivers on duty in the vehicle when legal driving times are exceeded. The system aims to contribute to driving safety and reduce driver-related traffic accidents.
Thanks to the embedded system integrated into the vehicle, the technology that continuously monitors the driver can detect changes in the driver by using facial recognition data.
While driving times are monitored in real time through vehicle data from the web-based management system, if the durations specified in the Highway Traffic Regulation are exceeded, the system automatically activates the warning mechanism.
If the driver change is not made within the specified time, the system can activate an emergency mechanism and can be configured for different durations according to needs. Designed to send an emergency code to the server system and relevant traffic units when the necessary conditions are met, the system provides an additional control mechanism to enhance driving safety.
Making evaluations on the subject, our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal emphasized the importance of research conducted at universities producing solutions to societal needs and stated the following: Universities are not only institutions that produce knowledge, but also structures that transform the knowledge they produce into social benefit. I believe this system, developed in the field of traffic safety, will help reduce traffic accidents and support safe transportation. I congratulate our professor on his work and hope that the contributions to our university's R&D activities continue to increase.
Our Rector also thanked Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, the President of the Higher Education Council, and Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak, the President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, for their support for R&D activities.
