A campus cleaning was carried out within the scope of World Cleanup Day in collaboration with Let's Do It Türkiye by the Sustainability Coordination Office of Kastamonu University. In the event held at the Kuzeykent Campus, academic and administrative staff, students, and volunteers came together.
The opening speech of the event held on September 20, 2026, in front of the Rectorate building was delivered by our University's Sustainability Coordinator, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Nurten Yer Çelik.
Stating that World Cleanup Day is a global social action program aimed at raising environmental awareness and supporting the understanding of sustainable living, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yer Çelik expressed that the Let's Do It movement, which started as a social solidarity initiative in Estonia in 2008, has spread to different countries and transformed into a global environmental movement.
Stating that the World Cleanup Day activities in Türkiye have been carried out under the coordination of the Let's Do It Association and Let's Do It Türkiye since 2018, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yer Çelik said that the activities were conducted with the participation of volunteers in all 81 provinces. Stating that the movement was also recognized with the Zero Waste Non-Governmental Organization Award in 2022, Assoc. Prof.Dr. Yer Çelik noted that the theme for 2026 is "Clean Plates, Clean Cities."
Stating that this year's theme aims to draw attention to food waste, prevent food waste, and raise awareness of recycling, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yer Çelik noted that the studies are also related to the "12th Goal: Responsible Consumption and Production" of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Stating that the "Informative Series for Society" was initiated by the Sustainability Coordination Office to raise awareness about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yer Çelik said that, within this scope, the coordination office obtained an accreditation authority certificate by applying to the global environmental movement coordinated by Let's Do It Türkiye.
Mentioning our university's work in the field of sustainability, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yer Çelik stated that our university ranked first in the Waste Area category in the 2025 international GreenMetric "Green Campus" evaluations. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yer Çelik thanked all the units that contributed to these efforts, particularly highlighting the work of the Zero Waste Management Coordination and its team.
Emphasizing that the event is not just a one-day cleaning effort, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yer Çelik stated that the 2026-2027 Academic Year Fall Semester at our University was launched with the slogan "Clean Campus 365. "In this context, stating that the aim is to maintain awareness of environmental cleanliness and waste management throughout the year, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yer Çelik emphasized the importance of contributions from all campus stakeholders, in addition to university staff and students, in preserving the cleanliness of the campus.
After the speech, the collected waste was sorted by type, weighed symbolically, and placed in the appropriate waste bins. With the implementation carried out as part of the event, awareness was raised about the correct separation of waste generated in daily life and its recycling.
The event carried out as part of our university's sustainability efforts concluded with a group photo session after the participants contributed to the campus cleanliness.
