At Kastamonu Education and Research Hospital (KEAH), interventional procedures carried out in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of Kastamonu University are providing hope to patients at risk of stroke.
The Interventional Radiology Unit at KEAH successfully continues to apply stents for carotid artery stenosis. As part of the treatment process, this procedure has helped many patients regain their health and protect them from stroke risk.
Plaques formed over time in the carotid arteries located on both sides of the neck due to reasons such as cholesterol and calcification can cause narrowing in the artery. If this condition is not treated, it can lead to serious consequences such as a stroke. In the method applied in the Interventional Radiology Unit, the narrowed artery is treated with a special balloon, and then a thin metal cage called a stent is placed to keep the artery open. In this way, blood flow returns to normal, and the risk of stroke is significantly reduced.
In the angiography unit, patients show improvements in a short time thanks to this non-surgical procedure. Patients treated so far have achieved positive results, making this procedure a routine practice.
"We Can Treat Our Patients Without Sending Them Out of Town"
Assist. Prof.Dr. İsmail Taşkent, a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Kastamonu University and an interventional radiology specialist, stated the following regarding the treatment:
"Stenosis of the carotid artery is one of the most important causes of stroke risk. We can perform this intervention safely and effectively in our hospital. We can provide this important treatment in our own city without having to send our patients out of the city. With the procedures we have performed so far, many of our patients have regained their health.
In the Interventional Radiology Unit, many complex procedures have been successfully carried out, including stopping pulmonary hemorrhage (hemoptysis) in patients who had previously bled in the lungs, clearing up blockages in intestinal blood vessels, treating tumors, inserting dialysis catheters, and draining abscesses.
Thanks to their partnership with Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital, specialist doctors from Kastamonu University's Faculty of Medicine offer local residents modern, high-quality healthcare services that are easily accessible.
