Kastamonu University implemented a meaningful social responsibility initiative in Antakya, bringing hope and awareness to children via the unifying force of art. The "Dreams Blossoming with Fairy Tales: Climate and Art Workshop," "Leave Your Mark: Paint, Print, and Have Fun," and the "Dreams and Traces: Thru the Eyes of Children" Exhibition, led by Assist. Prof. Dr. Sofya Cihan Canbolat from the Department of Graphic Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, met with children at the Antakya/Defne Döver Primary and Middle School from July 24 to 29, 2025.
The projects, carried out with the assistance of the university's Technology Transfer Office, aimed to create awareness among children in the city, which is attempting to heal the wounds of disasters, about the climate problem, love of nature, and ecological balance. The workshops were planned for two separate age groups: 18 students aged 6-8 and 12 students aged 9-11 both learned and created.
At the events, the fairy tales "The Little Leaf That Whispered to the Wind" and "The City Where Stones Whispered: Antioch," written by Assist. Prof. Dr. Canbolat, conveyed nature and environmental awareness to children in an inspiring language. Drama activities following the storytelling sessions allowed students to empathize with nature. Then, the children transformed their feelings into colorful drawings, creating their own unique works of art.
All the original works produced in the workshops were presented to art lovers on July 29, 2025, in an exhibition titled "Dreams and Traces: Thru the Eyes of Children." Sergi demonstrated not only the children's creativity but also their sensitivity to nature.
Arzu Deniz, the esteemed visual arts teacher from Mersin/Yenice Special Education Practice School and Hüseyin Polat Special Education Practice School, also volunteered to support the project.
Assist Prof. Dr. Sofya Cihan Canbolat thanked the Kastamonu University Technology Transfer Office, Kastamonu Truva Book & Cafe, Değişim Toy & Stationery, Yakup Ağa Çekme Helva, and Çobanoğlu Çekme Helva for their contributions to the project. Also Canbolat said, "Thanks to these contributions, we have made this journey with the children toward nature and imagination stronger."
